Grade one students will enjoy the beautiful pictures in the worksheet as well as the opportunity to review double-digit addition without regrouping. ![]() Students will also begin to see the differences between the ten's and one's place as they practice or review with this worksheet. Students develop an understanding of regrouping or trading to compose or decompose another unit. The pictorial representation of the numbers helps students to see the problem as they work out the addition and is a great strategy for use with addition. Explain to the students that each group used a strategy, or plan of action, to solve the problem. Put a tally mark to the left of the anchor chart on the whiteboard to represent the strategy each group used. ![]() Instruct students to share the strategy they used out loud. This series of base ten blocks worksheets is designed to help students of grade 1, grade 2, and grade 3 practice composition and decomposition of place value of whole numbers. Give students 23 minutes to solve the addition problem in their small groups. To add 2-digit numbers with regrouping, students will model each number using base 10 blocks, regroup by circling 10 ones and moving the 10 into the tens place, and then add the remaining blocks on a place value table.This would be an early step in regrouping to add 2-digit numbers. Instruct students to share the strategy they used out loud. This video demonstrates how to use base-10 blocks to help students solve multiplication problems that cannot be solved with automatic retrieval.
